Bison and the Salish and Pend d'Oreille people

Qwey qway - bison - buffalo - stood at the very heart of the traditional way of life of the Salish and Pend d'Oreille people. The relationship with buffalo was part of the relationship with all the animals, the plants, and the land itself. This was the way of life set forth in the tribes' creation stories, the stories of Coyote and the transformation of the world.

In August 2011, Thompson Smith from the Salish-Pend d'Oreille Culture Committee of the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes presented for Interagency Bison Management Plan Partners at the Salish Kootenai College, Pablo, Montana. This is the story of Ataticeʔ and his son Ɫatatí and how the herd know as Pablo-Allard really came to be. It is rich in history and told by the Salish-Pend d’Oreille.
