Letters to U.S. Secretary of Interior and Canada Env. Minister

These letters from the Buffalo Treaty to congratulate the new Secretary of Interior Deb Haaland and Canadian Environment and Climate Change Minister Jonathan Wilkinson to work more closely with Tribal and First Nations and to urge them to implement the conservation goal of 30% by 2030, the Bison Conservation Initiative, and the Paris Agreement on Climate change by working together.

“In view of the inevitable crises being brought about by climate change and biodiversity lost, it seems that we, the human species, have gone overboard, in terms of our lack of care regarding the environment, to the point where we cannot correct the situation through human efforts alone: we need help!

Consequently, the Buffalo Treaty signatories strongly urge you to strongly consider the ‘buffalo’ as one of those relatives that can assist us to restore an ecological balance. The buffalo is a keystone species for the environment. From time immemorial the buffalo has created a relationship with the natural environment resulting in an eco-balance with other animals and the plant life on the land. The buffalo, one can say, is a great environmentalist.”

The Buffalo Treaty signatories stand ready to explore ways and means to work and support your Administrations to achieve common reconciliation goals for people, nature and climate.
